Residential property

Japanese Knotweed Excavation and Removal in Residential Property

Our client was the owner of a residential property with very limited access to the rear of the house, which comprised of a decked terrace overlooking a long, narrow garden, which sat several feet lower than the house. There were two infestations of Japanese Knotweed present within the garden. The first was growing underneath and around a garden shed, the second was growing in a rockery that had previously been a pond. The client opted for a full excavation and removal, rather than a treatment solution, as they had plans to redesign the garden.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Giant Hogweed a risk to health?

The sap contains furanocoumarin, which causes painful blistering when it contacts the skin and is exposed to sunlight. Even brushing against the plant can result in burns or long-term skin sensitivity.

How does Giant Hogweed spread?

Each plant produces hundreds of seeds each year. The seeds form a long-lasting seed bank in the soil and can spread quickly if left unmanaged.

Is it illegal to have Giant Hogweed on your land?

It’s not illegal to have it, but it is a controlled species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act. You must not allow it to spread into the wild or onto neighbouring land.

What method do you use to remove it?

We use a specialist herbicidal control programme designed to eliminate active growth while exhausting the seed bank. Soil does not need to be removed.

Can you treat sites safely?

All work is carried out by trained professionals using licensed methods. We manage the risks carefully and ensure everything is delivered in line with current safety standards.
