Our advice on identifying Japanese knotweed

Japanese knotweed changes in appearance as it moves through seasons, making it difficult to spot if you’re not familiar with it. Below is a quick guide to help you recognise it year round.

Spring

Dormancy to growth

Look for pink or red buds at ground level. These develop into hollow, asparagus-like shoots that quickly grow into thick, bamboo-style shoots.

Summer

Peak growth

Stems shoot up to 3 metres tall, with purple-specked nodes and broad green leaves forming a dense, light blocking canopy.

Autumn

Flowering and decline

Clusters of creamy-white flowers appear. Leaves turn yellow and begin to droop as stems start to die back.

Winter

Dormancy

Above-ground stems become brittle and hollow. Rhizomes underground stay alive, ready to regrow in spring.
