Cell Burial Services

Cell burial deals with Japanese knotweed on site by sealing it safely underground. At Eco Control Solutions, we’ve delivered this method across a wide range of commercial and development sites. It’s fast, cost-effective, and ideal where future groundwork won’t disturb the area.

Why choose Eco Control Solutions for cell burial?

Not every site has the time or budget for full off-site removal. Our cell burial method contains knotweed safely on site at the correct depth, removing the need for off-site disposal. It’s a proven, compliant solution that gives planners confidence and keeps your project moving.

How does it work?

Site visit or

photo ID

We assess the site using images or by arranging a visit, confirming the presence and extent of the knotweed.

Treatment recommendation

You’ll receive a clear plan outlining the best removal method, herbicidal, excavation, burial or translocation, based on your needs.

Removal carried out
with precision

We deliver the chosen treatment using licensed methods, whether that’s excavation, spraying, or burial, while keeping the site safe, compliant and contained throughout.

Ongoing protection and
full documentation

Backed by a 10-year warranty and Optional Insurance Guarantee.

All documentation is issued for legal, lender or planning use, giving you long term peace of mind.

Site visit or photo identification

We assess the site either in person or via submitted images to confirm the presence of Japanese knotweed and understand the extent of spread.

Confirming suitability for burial

We’ll assess whether cell burial is appropriate for your site, considering timelines, ground conditions, and future land use. If suitable, we’ll propose a clear plan showing where and how the knotweed-affected soil will be buried and contained.

Safe burial and
sealing

Our team excavates the affected soil and reburies it in a geotextile-lined cell, sealed and marked at a safe depth. This keeps the material securely on site and prevents regrowth or future disruption.

Documentation and ongoing support

You’ll get clear records showing what’s been done and where the buried material is located. If needed, we can revisit the site to confirm containment or support any future land use plans.

Residential property

Japanese Knotweed Excavation and Removal in Residential Property

Our client was the owner of a residential property with very limited access to the rear of the house, which comprised of a decked terrace overlooking a long, narrow garden, which sat several feet lower than the house. There were two infestations of Japanese Knotweed present within the garden. The first was growing underneath and around a garden shed, the second was growing in a rockery that had previously been a pond. The client opted for a full excavation and removal, rather than a treatment solution, as they had plans to redesign the garden.

Frequently asked questions

Where can cell burial be used?

Cell burial may be appropriate on sites where invasive species like Japanese knotweed need to be contained, particularly larger sites where keeping material on-site is more practical than removing it.

What documentation do you provide?

You’ll receive a full PCA-compliant report, including drawings, photos, burial depth, GPS location, and a 10-year warranty where applicable. Optional Insurance-Backed Guarantees (IBG) are also available.

How deep does the buried material need to be?

Knotweed‑affected soil is typically sealed at a minimum depth of at least three metres, depending on ground conditions and future land use plans. This depth keeps rhizomes well below any standard excavation or landscaping activities.

Will the buried cell affect future development?

The cell must remain undisturbed, so it’s placed in areas not planned for future digging or construction. If that changes later, the cell may need relocating under specialist supervision.

Is Cell Burial more cost-effective than off-site disposal?

Yes, particularly on larger sites. Cell burial keeps all works on site, which can help simplify logistics and reduce potential delays.
