Himalayan Balsam Removal & Control Services

Eco Control Solutions carries out Himalayan balsam removal and control for sites across the UK and Ireland. This fast-growing plant can quickly spread if left unmanaged, especially near rivers, paths and open land. Our team assesses each site and recommends a practical removal plan based on what’s needed and what the site allows.

At Eco Control Solutions, we bring over 50 years of combined experience in managing invasive weeds across the UK and Ireland. Himalayan balsam poses a major risk to riverbanks, causing erosion, habitat loss, and increased flood risk, and we know how to deal with it.

Residential property

Japanese Knotweed Excavation and Removal in Residential Property

Our client was the owner of a residential property with very limited access to the rear of the house, which comprised of a decked terrace overlooking a long, narrow garden, which sat several feet lower than the house. There were two infestations of Japanese Knotweed present within the garden. The first was growing underneath and around a garden shed, the second was growing in a rockery that had previously been a pond. The client opted for a full excavation and removal, rather than a treatment solution, as they had plans to redesign the garden.

Frequently asked questions

What is Himalayan balsam and why is it a problem?

Himalayan balsam is a non-native plant that can grow up to 3 metres tall. It spreads quickly, especially near rivers and disturbed ground, where its shallow roots may contribute to soil instability.

How does Himalayan balsam spread?

Each plant can produce up to 800 seeds. The seedpods are under pressure and can burst when disturbed, ejecting seeds several metres from the parent plant.

What’s the main risk if it’s left untreated?

Himalayan balsam can spread quickly, outcompeting native plants and leaving riverbanks more prone to erosion. Eco Control Solutions helps manage these risks with targeted, low-impact treatment based on decades of experience.

How does ECS remove Himalayan balsam?

We use a targeted herbicide programme developed by our invasive weed specialists. The goal is to remove active growth and gradually deplete the seed bank. This low-impact approach avoids soil removal and is suitable for use near water.

Can ECS treat areas near water?

Where treatment is needed alongside rivers or watercourses, we apply for all required herbicide licences on behalf of our clients to ensure the work is carried out safely and compliantly.
