Spoil to Soil Services

Spoil to Soil is our controlled method for managing knotweed-affected soil on site. Contaminated soil is carefully screened under supervision, with materials retained and managed in line with project and compliance needs.

Why choose Eco Control Solutions for Spoil to Soil services?

Our Spoil to Soil method provides a controlled alternative to removing all knotweed-contaminated soil from the site. Contaminated material is carefully separated under supervision, with selected material managed appropriately under strict containment protocols.

It’s a practical way to reduce waste, minimise haulage, and keep more material on site where conditions allow.

Confirming suitability for reuse

We check whether on-site screening and reuse is appropriate based on ground conditions, proposed land use, and project timelines. If suitable, we’ll outline the scope of work and where any treated soil may be relocated.

Controlled excavation and screening

Our team excavates the affected soil and separates out any material containing knotweed rhizomes. Only soil deemed suitable for restricted on‑site placement is retained.

Records and compliance support

You’ll receive full documentation detailing what’s been excavated, screened, and reused. We can provide optional Insurance-Backed Guarantees and revisit the site to confirm ongoing compliance.

Residential property

Japanese Knotweed Excavation and Removal in Residential Property

Our client was the owner of a residential property with very limited access to the rear of the house, which comprised of a decked terrace overlooking a long, narrow garden, which sat several feet lower than the house. There were two infestations of Japanese Knotweed present within the garden. The first was growing underneath and around a garden shed, the second was growing in a rockery that had previously been a pond. The client opted for a full excavation and removal, rather than a treatment solution, as they had plans to redesign the garden.

Frequently asked questions

When is Spoil to Soil the right option?

It can be considered on sites with enough space to safely manage material. Whether it’s suitable depends on how the site is set up and what’s planned for the land.

What do you mean by rhizome-free soil?

This refers to soil that appears free from visible knotweed root material after screening. However, confirmation always requires careful assessment.

Where can the screened soil go?

That depends on the site. In some cases, it may be possible to retain screened soil in controlled, low risk areas, but this is always subject to assessment. Final decisions are made based on ground conditions, site use, and regulatory guidance.

How do you make sure the soil is safe to reuse?

All excavated material is screened under supervision. Any rhizome-bearing soil is separated and managed in accordance with PCA standards.

How is the right treatment method decided?

Every site is different, so we start with a full assessment. The chosen method will depend on factors like the extent of the issue, site access, future plans for the land and any relevant regulations.
